Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal disease is a chronic disease which must be continuously managed to prevent irreversible damage. The majority people are susceptible to periodontal disease. Only very small percentage of people are genetically resistant to the disease. For patients who follow proper home oral hygiene and have healthy gums, trips to the dental hygienist for professional cleanings and exams are recommended every 6 months. However, for those patients who have had aggressive cases of gum disease or have already undergone periodontal surgical treatment, professional cleanings are recommended every 3 months. Studies have shown that it takes approximately 3 months for bacteria to re-grow below your gum line and cause bone loss.
