Inflammation

Inflammation results from our body’s attempt to fight off infections, and guard against injury or irritation. Inflammation is often characterized by swelling, redness, tenderness and discomfort in and around the affected area. While inflammation initially is a part of the body's healing process, over time chronic inflammation can result in a dysfunction of the infected tissues and cause severe health complications.

Periodontal disease is an example of an inflammatory disorder. Some studies have shown that that the more severe symptoms of gum disease such as swollen, bleeding gums, recession of the gum, and loss of jaw bone may actually be caused by the chronic inflammatory response to the bacterial infection, instead of resulting from the bacteria itself. Many of diseases associated with periodontal disease are also considered to be systemic inflammatory disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease and some forms of cancer. Although more research is needed to uncover the relationship between gum disease and other diseases, findings have shown that people with gum disease are more susceptible to these other diseases. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and obtaining regular professional dental care is vital in having healthy gums and overall health.
